How to visit Mount Teide: by day, by night or to the summit

Mount Teide is the highest peak in Spain and the great symbol of Tenerife. There are many ways to visit it: by cable car, on a guided tour, at night to see the stars or climbing to the summit. Here is how to choose the one that fits your trip.

By day: cable car and Teide Tour

The cable car climbs in eight minutes from 2,356 metres at the base station to 3,555 at La Rambleta, just below the summit, with views of the other islands and the sea of clouds. You can stay an hour at the top. Buy just the ticket or join the Teide Tour with transport and an official guide, with or without the cable car.

In strong wind the cable car does not run, and because of the altitude it is not recommended for under-3s, pregnant women or people with heart or breathing problems.

To the summit

To reach the peak you need a special crater permit. There is a 6-hour trip with the cable car and the permit, rated hard because you walk above 3,500 metres, where the air is thin. As a private tour you can also hike up from Montaña Blanca.

By night: sunset and stars

Teide National Park sits above the clouds and is one of the world’s first Starlight Reserves. Night tours start with the sunset over the sea of clouds and continue with the Milky Way, planets and nebulae through professional telescopes. There are versions with a picnic, with dinner, with a visit to the Observatory or taking the cable car at sunset. It can be 10 to 15 degrees colder than on the coast: bring warm clothes.

Other ways to get there

If you want the journey to be part of the adventure, go up on a 4x4 jeep safari with a driver-guide, by quad or buggy on volcanic tracks, driving a Ford Mustang convertible for sunset, on a guided motorbike tour or on a hike around the Roques de García. And from Izaña, at 2,300 metres, a tandem paragliding flight of up to 45 minutes takes off.

Frequently asked questions

Can you go up Mount Teide without a permit?

Yes, as far as La Rambleta at 3,555 metres by cable car. To reach the very summit you need the special crater permit, which is included in the summit tour.

Is it better to visit Teide by day or by night?

By day you see the volcanic landscape and ride the cable car; by night you see the sunset over the sea of clouds and one of the clearest skies in the world. If you have time, both are worth it.

Will I be picked up at my hotel?

On tours with transport you are picked up at the meeting point closest to your hotel, in the south or north. On the private Teide VIP, at your own hotel.
